How It Works

Each category multiplies a standard flow rate or per-use volume by your frequency, then converts to a daily average.

Water Volume Estimates
  • Shower: 1.5-2.5 gallons per minute depending on head type
  • Bath: approx. 36 gallons per bath
  • Faucet (running): 2 gallons per minute
  • Toilet: 1.28-3.5 gallons per flush depending on model
  • Laundry: 15-40 gallons per load depending on machine type
  • Dishwasher: approx. 5 gallons per cycle; hand-washing approx. 20 gallons per session
  • Sprinkler: approx. 15 gallons per minute; drip/soaker approx. 5 gallons per minute
  • Car wash at home: approx. 40 gallons; commercial car wash approx. 15 gallons
The US national average for direct indoor and outdoor household water use is approximately 82 gallons (310 liters) per person per day, according to the US EPA. Food production ("virtual water") adds thousands of gallons more but is not included here.
